Crema Suprema opens for Buddy Valastro (AKA Cake Boss)

Not only has my grad film received worldwide recognition from festivals like Cannes International Film Festival Short Film Corner, and won 3 awards as well as 5 nominations, but "Crema Suprema" will now be screened at the first Canada's Baking and Sweets Show at the International Centre in Toronto on Oct. 2.

The film opens for "the Boss" Buddy Valastro, from the TV show Cake Boss.  Watch my award-winning short film, along with seeing the amazing decorations created by Pacha Balloon Creations (the exclusive decorators of the show), including a recreation of Carlo's Bakery on the stage made of balloons!  Come by the Pacha Balloon Creations booth and pick up a copy of my film, or be wowed by the balloon creations, couture and more!

Film Festival update...Cannes Film Festival and more...

Crema Suprema is being screened at the Cannes Film Festival! It will be shown in the Short Film Corner on May 13-22/09.
Crema Suprema has just been screened last month in Australia at the Heart of Gold International Film Festival as well on March 25-29/09.

Here is my stop motion animation graduate film from Sheridan College called "Crema Suprema".

Inspired by the feel of the old rubber hose animations up until the introduction of technicolour, Crema Suprema (2008; 2 m. 50 s.) is a multiple award-winning stop motion animation about two bakers who are competing to win the World's Greatest Cake Contest. As the bakers sabotage each others’ "masterpiece" cakes, it seems as though neither baker has a chance of winning. Only one cake can win.

It has won 3 awards: Best Animated Short at the LaFemme Film Festival (Beverly Hills), Best Animated Short (Jersey Shore Film Festival) and Audience Choice Award for Best Animation (Jersey Shore Film Festival).
It has been nominated for the following: Best of Festival and Best Animated Short at the Miami Short Film Festival; Best Animated Short at the Action on Film Festival (Pasadena); Audience Choice of Best Animation (Sedona Int. Film Festival) and an Animation Semi-finalist (Angelus Student Film Festival). It has been screened internationally, including the Short Film Corner at the Cannes Film Festival.

Lights, Camera, Action....."Crema Suprema" at the Film Festivals

Here is an update on all the festivals Crema Suprema has been a part of thus far...
1) the TAIS Showcase in Toronto 2) the Action on Film Festival in Pasadena, California (it is nominated for BEST ANIMATION) 3) the Jersey Shore Film Festival in New Jersey (it has won 1st PLACE in the BEST SHORT SHORT Category and the AUDIENCE CHOICE AWARD).
It is a semi-finalist in the Angelus Student Film Festival in Hollywood, CA and will be shown at that festival in September.
It is an honour to be a part of such prestigious events and an even greater honour to receive awards from those in the industry who are also enjoying my film as much as I did making it.

Industry Day!

Industry Day at Sheridan College was a fantastic experience! There was a lot of networking and some fantastic opportunities to speak with people from well-known studios like Dreamworks, Blue Sky, House of Cool, LAIKA, Chuck Gammage, Bardel, Studio B, etc... and the list went on and on. There were also people from film festivals that took a copy of my film to show at screenings, like the TAIS screening on June 27th in Toronto.
Thank you to everyone who came up to me and told me how much they enjoyed my film. To me, that is what story-telling is all about. I was glad to put a smile on my audience's faces and get a few good laughs along the way. And when my audience consisted of recruiters from high profile studios (as mentioned above), I could not wipe the smile off my face to know that they were impressed by "little ol' me" from Sheridan College. The film was so much fun to create and I am glad everyone had so much fun watching it as well. Thanks Sheridan College!

The Set

Tada! Here is the completed set (i.e. the interior of the bakery). To those who already asked me, yes, I built and painted the walls, shelves, counters, ovens, etc... There are details in the kitchen that will never be noticed the first time you see the film, such as the crown mouldings that look like it has baked goods in it. In Italian, this type of baked goods is actually like a biscuit and made from a ring of dough. It is known as "taralli".
A special thanks goes out to Cuppa Coffee Studios for donating items available for us to use. Although I created the entire set, I was able to use extra props like the cupcakes/bottles/boxes on the shelves to fill in empty spaces thanks to Cuppa Coffee. I made some of the foods, like the bread, the pastries on the moulding, some cakes etc... but it saved me a lot of time to be able to fill some of the other plates with what was already donated by them.

Notice how the set is on a platform. This is necessary to secure the puppets in place on the set, by means of really strong rare earth magnets. The magnets hold the feet in place from below, while the puppets stands firmly on top of the floor.

Let the building begin...

I began by roughing out the body structures on a piece of cardboard. This helped identify the scale of the puppets in comparison to one another, as well as the size of the kitchen (i.e. the set). I began creating the skeletons of the puppets out of twisted wires for strength. At the beginning of the limbs, you will see a piece of brass tube, which is where the duplicate limbs can be replaced. In production, puppets get damaged, so I had to make sure I had extra limbs, especially in my case, where the puppets are somewhat mimicking a rubber hose feel to them. When the puppets reach for ingredients, I wanted the arms to stretch in order to grab objects.

Here is the original idea for the story behind Crema Suprema. The reel still had a lot of work that needed to be done at this stage. The later part of the story wasn't as clarified at this stage yet. PLEASE REMEMBER... I had to board for stop motion NOT a 2d or 3d feature film. This is why the camera moves are limited. I had to build everything you see in each background. Pre-production is probably the largest amount of work involved for a stop-motion film.

The story: Set in an Italian bakery, two bakers are competing to win the World's Greatest Cake Contest. As tension rises and conflict builds, the bakers sabotage each others’ "masterpiece" cakes. The feud leads to the explosion of both cakes. A large piece from both of the bakers’ cakes collides in mid-air. The result of their disastrous sequence of events allowed them to win the cake contest as a team.

The whole film is in black and white up until one of the bakers swings a food colouring bucket at the other baker and it hits the screen. It is sort of an "underlying" theme about the process of animated film from rubber hose b & w style up until the introduction of technicolour. It's not obvious, but that's what I had in mind behind the reason for filming it this way. It's more of an artistic statement about animated films through the years. I guess it would have been cool to see them go the next step and enter the world of CG, but I just kept the focus of this statement on the art direction alone, not the medium itself.
